Active Living Resources for Professionals - South Tees

Middlesbrough’s Playing Pitch Strategy is a detailed report of all outdoor sports pitches in the area – including pitches for football, cricket, rugby, hockey, tennis, and golf. The strategy helps us understand what facilities are currently available and what we will need in the future.

The strategy looks at how pitches are being used by:

  • sports clubs

  • schools

  • community groups

  • informal or casual players

It follows national guidance and includes input from key sports organisations to make sure the findings are reliable and useful.

The final strategy will give clear, evidence-based recommendations to help plan and improve outdoor sports facilities in Middlesbrough. This will help us:

  • Make sure facilities are in the right places

  • Support local people to be more active and healthy

  • Meet the needs of growing communities and new housing developments

We have a 15-year strategy (2019 to 2034) that looks at the future needs of indoor sports and leisure facilities in Middlesbrough.

The strategy is based on research by Knight Kavanagh and Page Ltd (KKP), a specialist sports consultancy. It also follows national guidance from Sport England.

This work is about planning ahead so that Middlesbrough can offer modern, efficient, and sustainable places for people to be active. This is especially important as the area grows and tackles challenges like deprivation (when people or areas don’t have access to things they need for a good quality of life).

The strategy brings together key partners to help us:

  • plan the best facilities and activities for local people

  • support people to get active

  • improve health and wellbeing

  • help everyone reach their sporting goals
