Support for Schools

Healthstart

Since early 2025, we’ve been piloting a new programme in Middlesbrough and Redcar & Cleveland to help schools collaborate and improve young people’s health and wellbeing.

The HealthStart booklet is a guide for local schools and alternative provision settings. It explains how Public Health South Tees can support schools to care for their pupils’ health.

The booklet includes easy-to-follow information on different public health topics, such as:

  • helping young people stop smoking

  • support with sexual health

  • mental wellbeing

  • healthy eating and being active

It helps school staff see what support is available and how to find it – all in one place.

For more information, please email publichealthschools@middlesbrough.gov.uk and a member of the Public Health South Tees team will get back to you.

Real-time reporting mechanism

The more we understand the challenges children and young people face, the better we can support them.

If you're concerned about issues such as:

  • age-restricted products (like cigarettes or vapes)

  • drug use

  • teenage pregnancy

You can now share your concerns by filling out a simple form.

Your feedback helps us build a clearer picture of what’s happening in your area. We won’t ask for or share any personal details about students – it’s purely to help us plan better services and support.

Visit the Middlesbrough Council website to report any concerns for both Middlesbrough and Redcar & Cleveland.

School-based mental health support

Our HeadStart Team is here to support children and young people in South Tees when life feels difficult.

Our team works in schools and local communities to help with emotional health and to stop mental health problems before they start.

It’s all about building resilience – the skills to cope with challenges, bounce back, and do your best in life.
